How it Works: The brain groups objects that are enclosed within a defined area (such as a box, circle, or background color). This grouping occurs regardless of the visual differences between the individual elements within the region.
In Design: Designers use common region to create clear visual groupings, often with borders, boxes, or background shading. This technique helps structure a page and guide users to understand relationships between different elements.
Example: On a website, a form field might group together a series of input fields by placing them inside a bordered box, signaling to users that they
are part of the same
functional group.
Think of an online shopping website. Items might be organized into “Featured Products” and “Sale Items,” with different background colors or boxes that visually separate these groups, even if the items themselves vary in appearance.
Gestalt psychology was founded in Germany around 1910. The key figures behind its development were psychologists Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Koffka. They were reacting against the dominant psychological theories of the time, such as structuralism, which focused on breaking down mental processes into basic elements. Gestalt theorists argued that the human mind perceives objects as whole, unified forms, rather than as the sum of their parts.

While Region may overlap with Proximity and Similarity, it emphasizes the importance of boundaries or enclosures in creating visual groups. Even if objects are spaced apart or look different, they’ll still be perceived as related if placed within a common region.
